When a leg splint is needed, Craig uses a drinking straw. He will cut a piece the right length, then slit the straw open from end to end. Then he will open up the straw and slide the broken leg inside of the straw letting the edges fold back around the leg. If the break is really bad, he will add a second straw on top of the first to give the splint added strength. He finishes off with a few small pieces of athletic tape to hold the straws in place.

He leaves the splint on until the pigeon is able to walk on the leg, then he takes it off. The pigeon will continue to limp for a while, but will eventually be good as new. He has tried lots of other types of splints, but this is the easiest to put on and keep on.
